Welcome to the Finnish Wine Growers’ Association!
The Finnish Wine Growers’ Association is the central organization for professional and ambitious hobbyist wine growers in Finland. We are dedicated to promoting and developing the art of viticulture in the unique conditions of the North.
About Finnish Viticulture
Finnish wine growing is a field of passion, innovation, and resilience. We believe that despite the challenges of our climate, Finland has a unique terroir that produces exceptional and distinctive products.
Due to our northern location, Finnish winemakers primarily utilize hardy grape varieties (such as Solaris, Zilga, Hasanski Sladki, Somerset Seedless, Rondo and various North American hybrids) aiming to high quality products. Our wines are known for their fresh flavours and crisp acidity, a refreshing characteristic due to the cool climate.
Our Activities and Mission
Our mission is to support our members with the latest research, best practices, up-to-date information and training. Additionally, the association is focused on promoting viticulture in Finland. The association was established in 2010 and currently has 135 members. The members vary from hobbyists to professional viticulturists. The most northern vineyards in Finland are in Munsala and Nurmes (both in 63° latitude).
The Association serves as a comprehensive resource for the Finnish grape growing community.
- Knowledge Sharing: We organize annual meetings, workshops, and field trips to share expertise on topics ranging from vine pruning and soil management to fermentation techniques and refining grape based products.
- Advocacy: We actively work with governmental bodies to represent our members’ interests to promote favorable regulations for growers and producers. Finland is currently in the process of applying to EU wine producing countries.
- Networking: We foster a strong community through annual meetings, events, and a shared platform for collaboration and peer support.
- Quality Promotion: We host informal quality assessments to raise the standards of Finnish wines and develop the practices.
